A, an, the (articles) adalah kata yang digunakan untuk membatasi pengertian dari noun (kata benda).

1.    Penggunaan kata “The”

•   Ikuti kata benda tertentu atau dikenal

•  Tunggal dan jamak

•  Satu satunya

• Gelar superlative

• Geografis

·        Gunung                       : Gunung Krakatau

Example         : The Krakatau is mount active.

·        Sungai                        : Sungai Tamborasi

Example         : The tamborasi is shortest rivers in Indonesia.

·        Pulau                          : Pulau Seribu

Example         : The thousand island is very beautiful.

·        Laut/samudra            : Samudra Atlantik

Example         : The Atlantic Ocean is second largest ocean in the world.

Kata “The” di gunakan tidak hanya untuk yang ada di atas, tetapi ada beberapa kata penggunaan lainnya yaitu:

·        Nama keluarga          : Obama’s

Example         : The Obama’s go to Singapore

·        Gelar                           : Professor

Example         : The Professor handsome

·        Nama Universitas     : University of Indonesia

Example         : The University of Indonesia broad

·    Famous of Architecture (nama bangunan terkenal) contoh: the Eiffel tower, the monas, dll.

·        Area (wilayah) contoh: the south east.

·        Forest (hutan) contoh: the amazone.

·      Nama Negara, jika Negara tersebut termasuk Negara bagian, Negara kerajaan, Negara republic dan di akhir tulisan Negara menggunakan “s”.

·        Number (angka) jika menunjukkan ranking, contoh 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th.

·        Group of people (sekumpulan orang) contoh: The Blind, The Heroes.

·        Part of longer group (sekumpulan orang yang banyak) contoh: one of the children, a student in the class.

2.    Penggunaan kata “An dan A”

·        “a” digunakan jika ada kata benda setelah itu “noun” berawalan huruf mati “consonant”. Contoh: a book, a chair, a table.

·        “an” digunakan jika kata bendanya “noun” brawalan huruf “vowel” (a,i,u,e,o) contoh: an apple, an Ink, an earth.

·        Dgunakan untuk kata benda yang “singular” atau jumlahnya hanya satu.

·        Digunakan ketika kata bendanya tidak kita ketahui spesifikasinya/kita tidak tahu sama sekali mengenai benda tersebut.

·        Digunakan untuk jumlah benda nya yang mampu di hitung, seperti sayuran, buah, hewan, dll. Contoh: a vagatable, an animal, a paper.

·        Tidak bisa untuk : a rice karena beras jumlahnya tidak bisa di hitung (tidak terbatas).

Contoh penggunaan kata An dan A:

            Anthony is bitten a dog. The dog is infected rabies. Then, Anthony is brought to a doctor. Doctor is his own uncle.
